Hurricane Season in Palm Beach County: Tire Prep Checklist

Get tires ready before a storm in Palm Beach County: pressure, tread, the spare, and what to keep in the car. Checklist from Los Paisas Tires Shop.

When a storm is coming to Palm Beach County, gas lines get long and shops get busy. Your tires are easy to forget, but if you have to evacuate or drive on roads full of debris, they matter. Here is a short checklist from Los Paisas Tires Shop on S Military Trl in West Palm Beach.

Check the tires before the warning

  • Pressure: set all four tires to the number on the driver's door sticker, checked cold in the morning.
  • Tread: worn tires hydroplane more easily in heavy rain. If tread is close to 2/32 of an inch, replace the tire before the season, not during the storm.
  • Sidewalls: look for cuts, cracks, or bulges. A damaged sidewall should not go on a long evacuation drive.
  • The spare: many spares are found flat when they are needed. Check its pressure too.

What to keep in the car

  • An inflated spare, jack, and lug wrench (make sure the wheel lock key is in the car)
  • A tire pressure gauge and a small 12V inflator
  • Flashlight, phone charger, water, and a paper copy of important phone numbers

After the storm

Roads fill with nails, screws, and debris. Avoid driving through standing water when you can. If a tire keeps losing air in the days after, bring it in: punctures in the tread can often be repaired; damage near the sidewall means a replacement.
